A stump is the part of a removal people live with for years: it stops the mower, sprouts every spring, feeds carpenter ants, and slowly rots into a soft spot in the lawn. Grinding chews the stump and the top of the root flare into chips six to twelve inches below grade, in an hour or so, with a machine that fits through a standard gate. The hole is backfilled with the grindings or with topsoil and can be seeded straight away. It is the right answer for almost every stump that is not in the way of a building, a driveway or a new tree.
